Surface potential of a polar oxide film: FeO on Pt(111)

چکیده
We have studied a thin FeO film on Pts111d using scanning tunneling microscopy. The corrugation of the Moiré pattern, that arises due to a lattice mismatch between the oxide film and the substrate, is found to increase dramatically when the microscope is operated in the field-emission regime. This contrast enhancement can be attributed to variations in the energy at which field-emission resonances are observed. We assign this effect to variations of the surface potential within the Moiré unit cell. Using a simple electrostatic model we show that in this oxide film with polar termination, such variations can be induced by very subtle differences in geometry.

Self-organization of gold atoms on a polar FeO(111) surface.
The spatial distribution of single Au atoms on a thin FeO film has been investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The adatoms preferentially adsorb on distinct sites of the Moiré cell formed by the oxide layer and the Pt(111) support and arrange into a well-ordered hexagonal superlattice with 25 angstroms lattice constant. The self-organization is the conse...

The structural and magnetic properties of ultrathin FeO(111) films on Pt(111) with thicknesses from 1 to 16 monolayers (MLs) were studied using the nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation. A distinct evolution of vibrational characteristics with thickness, revealed in the phonon density of states (PDOS), shows a textbook transition from 2D to 3D lattice dynamics. For the thinnest ...
متن کاملCharging of metal adatoms on ultrathin oxide films: Au and Pd on FeO/Pt(111).
We present a combined experimental (STM/scanning tunneling spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory) study on the deposition of Au and Pd metal atoms on FeO/Pt(111) ultrathin films. We show that while the Pd atoms are only slightly oxidized, the Au atoms form positive ions upon deposition, at variance to a charge transfer into the Au atoms as observed for MgO/Ag(100). The modula...

The interaction of atomic hydrogen with thin epitaxial FeO(111) and Fe3O4(111) films was studied by TDS, XPS and LEED. On the thin, one Fe-O bilayer thick FeO film, partial reduction occurs in two steps during exposure. It ends after removal of 1⁄4 monolayer (ML) of oxygen with a 2×2 pattern appearing in LEED. This FeO0.75 film is passive against further reduction. The first reduction step satu...
متن کاملGrowth from behind: Intercalation-growth of two-dimensional FeO moiré structure underneath of metal-supported graphene
Growth of graphene by chemical vapor deposition on metal supports has become a promising approach for the large-scale synthesis of high quality graphene. Decoupling of the graphene from the metal has been achieved by either mechanical transfer or intercalation of elements/molecules in between the metal and graphene. Here we show that metal stabilized two-dimensional (2D)-oxide monolayers can be...
